  2. :

This course is a great overview for doing business with USAID and is suitable for all levels of experience. Chris is very knowledgeable with practical and relevant experience in contracting in USAID. His understanding of the end-to-end capture cycle with USAID provided great insights. The participants of the course also were great sources of information in the USAID environment. Highly recommend this course for anyone who is interested in fostering a strong relationship with USAID!

  3. :

I highly recommend this course. I recently won an award as a subcontractor but still I learned a lot. I was able to research opportunities, incumbents and competitors during the course. As a high level CO from a regional Mission, Chris brings much to the table and knows every nook and cranny of solicitations and proposals. The three days are jam packed so be prepared to work hard and learn loads!

  4. :

I highly recommend this course. I learned much more than I expected and during the three days of the class, and was able to research competitors and incumbents. Having been a CO for a regional Mission, Christopher brings a very high level of experience to the table and knows all the nooks and crannies of a solicitation and a good proposal. I am a recipient of a recent proposal but he still brought new informations to the table. Worth every penny. (Get lots of sleep, the course is rigorous!).

  5. :

The Winning USAID Contracts Workshop was a great experience for me. I found the instructor, Chris O’Donnell, a former USAID Contracting Officer, to be extremely knowledgeable and very helpful. Even though I’ve been writing USAID contract proposals for more than 25 years, I learned a lot. I especially appreciated the information on how to submit an unsolicited proposal and how to write a proposal without seeing the RFP. Very creative! I hope some of my clients embrace these strategies! I am putting the knowledge I’ve gained into action immediately! If you want to win more USAID contracts, this is the course for you. Being able to gain information that goes to the heart of the contracting process was invaluable. Don’t wait! Sign up today!

  6. :

Excellent course and very much worth the cost. I came away with not only a better understanding of the USAID acquisition approach and strategy, but a plan to develop multiple proposals. Chris offered pragmatic guidance on preparing proposals and how to use solicitations to inform capture planning. Highly recommend for companies and individuals wanting to establish or expand their footprint within the Agency.

  7. :

I thought I knew a good bit about USAID solicitations and responses, but I walked away from this course with so much more than I ever expected to learn. Chris is a wealth of knowledge, and this course offers tons of valuable tips and information. Highly recommend to anyone who wants to improve their USAID proposals!

  8. :

Excellent overview of the basics as well as valuable insight into USAID’s procurement process. This course is great for anyone new to USAID business development but also a great refresher for seasoned professionals as well.

  9. (verified owner):

I highly recommend this course led by Chris. Having worked in the USAID business development world for about 7 years now, I was surprised to discover how much about the business there was to learn! Chris packed a lot of valuable information into this 3-day course. It was well-structured, sharply tailored, and provided keen insights from the perspective of a former USAID CO. Many thanks to Chris for this excellent course.

  10. :

This course covers all the necessary points an organization or an individual should know in order to prepare a well researched and responsive proposal. It also provides a unique perspective and valuable insight from a former USAID Contract Officer. I found this course very useful.

  11. :

This course was a great overview for someone like me who is new to the USAID contracts space! We had plenty of time for even the most detailed question and Chris made sure to give us full answers and tailor examples to us.

  12. :

Overall this course great and powerful. The handbook is full of information for non profit and for profit, for great and small organizations. The instructor is very knowledgeable and full of experience. At the end of the course I really feel ready to negotiate and win a contract with USAID, I understood the culture, the language and how to approach USAID officers.

  13. :

Chris was incredibly knowledgeable about USAID as well as government contracting in general. Easy going class where questions are welcome and answered thoroughly. This is a great class for anyone currently working in USAID or is looking to get into it.

  14. (verified owner):

This course is very useful not only for small businesses but for anyone who is trying to learn the unique way USAID works. I was most intrigued by all the business development aspects and possibilities of the process. Great course, I took away a lot, and it definitely assisted me and my organization to review our strategy with USAID.

  15. (verified owner):

Chris has the unique perspective of having facilitated proposal review teams from the inside. That insight and knowledge, as well as his real-world experience and expertise, was apparent throughout his course, along with Chris’ passion for development work. The course outline and materials are methodically laid out and comprehensive. I took a similar course from another training provider, but felt Chris’ course provided me the real insights to be competitive.

  16. :

The course was very thorough and useful. It covered every aspect and section of the submission process. While the focus was contracts, Chris very helpfully pointed out the similarities and differences with grants where appropriate.

  17. :

Chris is highly knowledgeable and a great presenter. We had participants from all over the world and with varying skills in business development, and he was able to engage the entire group and make it interesting and informative for everyone. He provided useful tips for communicating with USAID, and added to my depth of understanding of USAID’s side of the solicitation process.

  18. :

This course was very useful for a small business trying to enter the USAID market. The most valuable items were discussions on costing and the proposal process. As an organization who mainly works with the UN it was valuable to learn how USAID works from an insider and get some of the tips. Chris did a great job keeping the class involved and sharing his experiences with USAID.

  19. :

The USAID Winning Contracts Course was extremely helpful for myself and colleague. As a small business trying to enter into USAID for the first time the overview was extensive and provided us with excellent insights on how to start our engagement process. Chris was extremely professional, well spoken, and extremely well organized throughout the three-day workshop. Along with that, providing us with the full powerpoint presentation as a resource for us to continue to utilize moving forward will be beyond helpful. Overall I would suggest this course to anyone who would like to learn more about the inner workings of USAID Contracts and how to successfully secure them in the future.

  20. (verified owner):

Very thorough and engaging overview of the USAID contracting process. Helpful information and guidance about USAID presented in a low-stress environment. Easy for attendees to participate, ask questions, and get information needed about the Agency and its requirements. Well worth the money.

  21. :

Very insightful. Other trainings on proposal writing are often from the point of view of the bidder, this was unique because it was from the point of view of a former USAID contracting officer. It was extremely useful to get tips on how to best communicate with USAID and understand expectations as well as to get a review of market intelligence resources and relevant regulations.

  22. :

First thank you very much for your kind consideration to support and helping me to get this valuable training with out any payment. Then in the five days training my expectation is I get a lot of knowledge and skills to win USAID Grant. I wish good time for you and hopefully we will see Development Essentials one of the vibrant organization.
    Thank you very much.

  1. (verified owner):

I participated in 2 courses with Development Essentials: USAID Contracts Compliance for Success and USAID Grants Policies and Procedures. What stood out the most about Chris’s teaching of the information is that he framed it as the art of compliance, and it truly can be an art. Though I came into the course certified as a USAID COR/AOR and having years of experience working with both contracts and grants, both courses highlighted updated regulation changes, as well the inside USAID perspective of such, which was invaluable. Chris brought in real life examples from his many years of experience, as well linked the information to the current work of all the participants. He was also very flexible in adjusting his teaching depending on the level of experience each participant had in this area and never hesitated to answer any question. I highly recommend these courses for anyone working with USAID contracts and grants.

  2. :

This is a great course, If you are new to the contracting field and would like to learn more about regulations and solicitation process, then this the right course for you. I took this course and learned a a lot.

  3. :

Definitely worth the time and expense; I wish I had taken the course years earlier.
The course content includes al aspects of contracting for USAID projects covering a vast number of regulations and procedures of contract executions in compliance with the US government rules and regulations.
The materials are detailed and the instructor (Chris) knowledge and experience are excellent.

  4. (verified owner):

Many people have recommended this course to me, so I was very excited to attend and it did not disappoint! I thought it was a very helpful, informative and well thought out course. The information provided covered many different regulations, requirements and compliance when working with USAID. As well, it was great to have the perspective from the government side and the private side. Chris is very knowledgeable and always made sure to answer everyone’s questions. I highly recommend this course to help understand the compliance requirements when working with USAID!

  5. :

Chris was a great trainer, I attended the 2 day Contracts Compliance for Success and I learnt a lot. He made the rules and regulations seem easy and manageable by demystifying most of the requirements bu SAID. The course was participatory and very interesting.
I would recommend that if there are an adequate number of applicants, maybe to have a separate class for NGOs and one for commercial entities which would allow the teams to dig deeper into what directly concerns them based on the type of their organization.

  6. (verified owner):

Chris’ knowledge of USG regs combined with his experience supporting USAID contract awardees made this training both highly informative and applicable. I am new to USAID acquisition financing mechanisms and this two day overview of key regulations and compliance topics was incredibly valuable. In particular, I really appreciated the way Chris made an effort to understand the work and experience of each of the course participants in order to demonstrate where and how specific elements were relevant to each of us. This meant that we were not just learning theory, but how to implement it for successful execution of USAID contracts.

  7. (verified owner):

I am new working with USAID contracts so this course provided me with a lot of useful information. I feel that moving forward topics discussed in the course will come up and I will be more prepared to deal with them. Chris definitely has a lot of knowledge and experience to share and is more than willing to impart what he knows to help anyone navigate the field.

  8. (verified owner):

I got a lot out of this course, including a number of helpful resources and a better sense of what demands arise from laws / regs, vs those coming from preferences of a prime contractor or grantee. Thanks Chris.

  9. (verified owner):

I have attended this course in February 2018 in Virginia. It has been a very detailed and comprehensive look at the USAID contracts compliance. The course covered many nuanced aspects of dealing with contracts and understanding the best practices. It has been valuable knowledge acquired. Anyone working with USAID contracts and hesitating about the compliance, this is the course to do!

  10. :

This course is very good course for people who are looking to learn about government contracts. Chris O’Donnell has a lot of knowledge and experience. This training strengthened my knowledge and skills on contracts management issues, and helped me in interpreting many FAR articles and clauses. Chris met my expectation in this training, and was able to help me find answers for my questions in the FAR. I highly recommend this training.

  11. (verified owner):

I attended this training in December 2017 in Virginia, U.S. The trainer Chris O’Donnell is a seasoned USAID contracting officer with a lot of knowledge and experience in USAID Contracts around the world. I found this class to be very productive and informative and I learnt so many rules and regulations and methods of approaching USAID that I would otherwise have not come across with. I recommend this training for staff of contractors at every level specifically for Compliance Managers, COP’s and Finance Managers.

  12. (verified owner):

I had a great opportunity to attend this course in September 2017.The purpose of my training was to update my government contracts knowledge, also to maintain a company (Federal Contractor) USAID contracts compliance program. The training course provided by Mr. O’Donnell met all my expectations, as the course is designed as a very valuable resource to assist contractors in managing efficient compliance program. The course covered many areas of specific complexities, also practical guidance based on USAID experience and recommendations for appropriate actions.

I had the opportunity to participate in the course organized in July 2017 in Nairobi. This highly detailed course has allowed me to significantly strengthen and deepen my knowledge and skills on contract management processes in accordance with USAID procedures and policies. The training methods used by Chris are mainly based on practical cases studies. In summary, Chris is an excellent facilitator and has extensive experience on matters related to USAID contract procedures and policies. 2. (verified owner):

I would highly recommend this course for anyone looking to learn more about USAID and their funding opportunities. The course is very practical and informative. It is well designed to work for anyone, whether you are new to the grant writing process, or experienced.

  3. :

Chris’ course was excellent. My background is new business recruiting for USAID proposals. I recently started a new position in the business development team – this course has given me all the tools for success in working on the full cycle of business development. Chris starts you off with tracking the RFA and teaching you the timeline of when you need to be going on your scoping trip to your 30 day calendar for when the solicitation is released to how to follow up once you’ve submitted your application. He shows you all the important websites and resource you need to know about in order to do research and prepare your team to be as competitive as possible. He goes through costing and compliance. This course is a must take for any new business development professional or any professional that wants to fine tune their knowledge on the business development process. Chris gives you all the tools you need and tells you exactly what you need to do in order to WIN! Send all your new business development hires to this training to get them up to speed!

  4. :

The course was very informative and the presentations well prepared. I would recommend for all professionals in grant making be it USAID or any other donors. Good work Chris.

  5. :

I would highly recommend this course for anyone who is searching for USAID funding.

  6. :

The experience Chris has on USAID grant management made the course to be very informative. The detailed presentations and practical examples made it a reality in navigating USAID funding. Recommended for all professionals.

  7. :

Very practical and value adding course.

  8. :

The course was great in demystifying USAID funding. I feel more equipped in finding information on various sites and actually submiting applications.

  9. :

My organization has a very specific niche, and I took this to help my organization learn how to win more funding. I had been working in business development for about a year and a half, but I still learned a lot of new things I had never been exposed to before. Chris was incredibly thorough and I can’t believe how much he covered in the three days. This is a course that will show you where and how to pursue the funding. Even after the course ended, when I had follow-up questions, Chris was very responsive and helpful.

  10. :

The experience in courses and trainings in DC and international organizations shows the highly professional and down-to-earth knowledge share in Development Essentials US. USAID processes were masterly explained and real cases examples let us know the reality and proved tracks to succeed in the processes of grants/contracts application process. Tips and advices from a real expert.

  11. (verified owner):

Our small unit has applied for a number of USAID grants and won a few, but “Winning USAID Grants” gave me new information about how to undertake research that will enable us to be strategic about submitting unsolicited concept papers rather than merely tracking RFA’s. I have already brought the valuable information gained in this course back to my colleagues, and we had a meeting to set priorities in preparation for writing concept papers. Chris is very personable and answered our many questions with both good humor and expertise. I highly recommend this course to anyone who needs to learn more about obtaining USAID funding!

  12. (verified owner):

This course is excellent for beginners as well as for those who needed to refresh their skills on USAID grant. Thank you Chris for the excellent training.

  13. :

This was by far one of the best training courses I have ever taken, and I used to be a trainer myself so I am very picky. He imparts information that you would have a very hard time obtaining elsewhere, and does so in a very engaging, enjoyable way. Two thumbs up!

  14. :

The training will better equip me with skills on making USAID Grant proposals

  15. (verified owner):

A good introduction to USAID proposal development with insights into “niche” markets and resources for determining funds available and priorities within the US and Host Countries.

  16. :

This course offers a comprehensive overview of the USAID funding mechanisms and how best to approach winning USAID grants. Chris’ extensive experience in the field with USAID provides a donor perspective that is very helpful in preparing and positioning your organization for success. His tips will definitely help our organization move forward. Thanks Chris for a great course!

  17. (verified owner):

The course was very informative and detailed with specifics on how to find grants, where to find them, and gaps to avoid in order to win a USAID award. I highly recommend the course for beginners like me who are new to this area because it is a great starting point and will definitely point you in the right direction. Thanks Chris!

  18. :

The course was very detailed and informative. But it was probably too long and some of the stuff could best be directed to senior management. AGRA as an
institution will need to strategically utilize this information in the structuring of the Resource Mobilization Department.
    Keep up the good work.

  19. :

Very useful course that I needed especially on checking to see where the money can be found and the navigation into the various websites to identify priorities and other useful information. All the best

  20. :

Chris is an excellent trainer, I have learn’t a lot of insights into the process of winning USAID awards, He has a tremendous wealth of knowledge into the dynamics of winning awards, managing and implementing these awards. Thank you Chris and I hope that you will be able to come up with more trainings on other various ways of understanding the complexities of USAID.
    Sincerely
    Antonny Kavinguha

  21. :

Very practical and value adding course. I recommend it to very growing organization.

  22. :

As a Logistics Manager within my Organisation funded by USAID I would like to share lessons learnt during my daily duty when performing Procurment of Lab commodities locally following as well FAR II requirement.

A very detailed, insightful course. The material was clear and useful, and Chris took the time to expand in topics that demanded careful examination. A list of tools and sources was also provided, thus completing the manual given to participants during the course. The course and the manual are organized in a way that makes it easy to review topics and notes in a time-saving fashion.

This course was very helpful for me – as someone totally new to the world of USAID grant management. I feel like I have all of the fundamental knowledge to work successfully in the USAID framework. Would recommend the course to anyone who needs to really learn the details and nuances of USG grants.

  3. :

I took this course in August 2017 and don’t regret it at all. USAID grants policies and procedures are complicated and require careful oversight. It was refreshing to walk through policies and procedures with someone who has been a part of USAID. The course felt even more personalised due to Chris’s experience working in the East Africa region, particularly Kenya. Chris was patient, and adjusted his training to meet the needs of the participants depending on what their level of experience with USAID was. Understanding the rationale for certain policies and USAID expectations boosted my confidence in working with USAID. Despite the trainings being all day, he was so engaging that time flew by without my noticing. I would recommend this training to anyone interested in learning more about USAID grant policies and procedures, especially for folks who are starting off their partnerships with USAID. Thank you Chris!

I found the USAID Grants Policies and Procedures Course very informative. Our organization has never received a USAID grant before this course, and I thought it prepared us well for the prospect of applying for and managing one. Thanks so much Chris for your time and assistance.

  5. (verified owner):

Our sincerest thanks to Chris for taking hundreds of policy pages and making them more approachable and relevant to our project work. One of the strengths of the training was Chris’ willingness to balance the overall USAID procedures and guidelines with real-world examples – both from Chris’ experience as well as all of the students in the course. Chris took care to answer all of the questions that we brought forward during this time and I feel more empowered and confident to engage with USAID grants as a result. Looking forward to a next opportunity to learn from Chris!

  7. :

I attended the USAID Grants acquisition and the compliance management courses this past week. I highly recommend them to anyone in a Chief of Party position as they give you an in-depth knowledge of what your team is up against and how to support them. Chris also has a deep practical field experience to draw from.

  8. :

The course was very useful and well tailored to our needs as a university. In the past several years, our university has substantially increased our work in partnership with USAID and other federal funding agencies, and Chris’ course was extremely useful to our whole group in reviewing and discussing procedures and policies for USAID, DOS, MCC, DOL, etc. Chris’ approach was very well organized and he provides a handbook to each participant that serves as an excellent resource for us moving forward. We very much appreciate the knowledge that Chris shared with our whole Team and his ability to adapt his Development Essentials course to our specific needs as a university.

  9. :

This was a really informative course and worthwhile for people with varying levels of experience. Chris did a great job tailoring the course to be both useful for people who are new to USAID and seasoned compliance staff. I appreciate the resources he has put together for future use.

I took this course last June and it was a great one and I am very glad I did it with Development Essentials. It was a solid two-day review going through USAID grants policies and procedures. The course was very interactive with quizzes and practical cases.
Mr. Donald is an expert in this area and what I liked most about the training is the tips and do’s/ and don’t he provided us during the course.
    I definitely recommend this course.
